Natural Gas market
The natural gas market is traded at the New York Mercantile Exchange. Regular session trading hours are from 9:00 AM Central Time to 1:30 PM Central Time. Additional trading takes place in afternoon/overnight hours. The market is traded in 10,000 million British thermal unit (BTU) contracts, with a minimum price fluctuation of 0.1 cents per million BTU indicating a change in value of $10.00 per contract. This market is particularly sensitive to outbreaks of cold weather in major cities on the eastern United States in the winter time. It can also rally during periods of extreme heat in that area in the summer. It is also very sensitive to the development of hurricanes in the western Gulf of Mexico.
